Very welcoming friendly staff and resident pub dog Fred!! Good range of well kept beers and great menu reasonably priced. Freshly prepared generous portions. Definitely recommend.

We are annual pass members at Twycross Zoo and usually eat in the zoo’s own restaurant during our frequent visits. During recent refurbishment of the zoo restaurant we stumbled across this quaint, authentic pub as an alternative. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. During good weather you can eat in the idyllic beer garden. Very impressed, we will never eat at the zoo again and will return here time and time again!

There were four of us having an evening meal. All of us had starters and main course. All the food was excellent! Cannot fault the pub. Highly recommended .

On our way back from Twycross Zoo saw the road sign for the pub so went there. As you walk in it feels very homely & the landlady made us feel very welcome we found a table & ordered our food which we all enjoyed I had lamb shank with minted lamb sauce & creamy buttered mash & the lamb fell off the bone. Drinks were about average price would definitely return if in the area again.

A place we have intended to visit for years. It worth the wait! The menu caters for all tastes. The food we had was delicious, cooked to order and very tasty. The meat is supplied by a local butcher and you can tell that it is not the usual “food factory” quality but full of flavour. There was a lovely, warm and friendly welcome from the staff and from Pam, the head of the family ownership team. We are definitely visiting again very soon!

February 2017

We were aimlessly driving round the area looking for somewhere for lunch when we happened on this gem. The welcome could not be faulted, nor the hand pulled beer and home cooked food.
The landlord was a lovely chap and made time to chat to us about the pub and area.
The food was obviously home cooked, scrummy mushroom soup and a huge ploughmans with hand carved ham and lovely chutney.
The pub dog was a character too!
We shall return to this lovely pub when our wandering find us back in the area.

We had such a lovely meal today – 16th Feb, lunchtime. My Mother had rang and booked the day before, speaking to a lovely gentleman who was more than happy for us to bring our small Yorkshire Terrier.
On arrival we were greeted by such a friendly, welcoming lady who couldn’t have been more helpful. My Mother explained that the family members we were meeting were running half an hour late – she was worried that we might be too late to eat. The lady assured her that there was no problem at all!
The food we ordered was excellent – lamb shanks and pork medallions. I am vegan and the lady went out of her way to suggest possible meals – such a pleasant change!
I don’t usually write reviews but we had such an enjoyable meal, that was made all the more pleasurable by the kind, friendly lady who served us! Thank you!

This time it was my bday and we decided to try somewhere really different and find this village pub. It is a proper traditional pub !we ordered two calamari for starters and it was very tasty !i also have to say service was very quick !the guy behind the bar was very friendly and looked very iconic ! Mains were fish and chips and burger !they were very decent size and it was also very tasty !i would say the food was fantastic!if you are after a traditional pub with checked seats and great food this is the place to visit. We will definitely come back here !thank you!

February 2017

Came in with my daughter and had the best homemade Steak n Ale pie and according to my daughter she had the best burger and home made fries ever!!! Have already booked for mothers day, Will be back before then though. If you love dogs you will love it here as Freddy the pub dog is the sweetest thing, but overall this is a very homely place to eat.

January 2017

Visited here with a group of 11 including five kids aged 6 and under. The room we spent the afternoon in was perfect for us to enjoy good company without interrupting others with our children.
The food was a slim menu for New Year’s Day, but it was very good and we stayed for puddings.
The burger patty was great and the meat in the pie was really good.
The service was good and positive.
Thanks.

We enjoyed a Sunday pub lunch here last week. The staff were all incredibly friendly, the food was great and the portions were huge! We sat near a gorgeous log burner and enjoyed a fab meal. Couldn’t fault anything! Can’t wait to head back again!

Another lovely meal at this beautiful old thatched roof pub. The good is really good, the service is excellent and very friendly. Great atmosphere. Simply not enough places like this. I so wish I had a local place like this.

A welcome sight on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon, The Bird In Hand is a traditional half-timbered, thatched pub with an enclosed beer garden complete with a resident black labrador, Freddie, who meets and greets! We enjoyed some well kept beers from a wide range of real ales and ciders, and a friendly chat with the barman.

6 September 2016

We visited the Bird In Hand on 3 September before travelling to Risley for the weekend.
Walked into this friendly pub and were greeted as usual by Freddie the resident Labrador. We had a quick look at the menu and after ordering our food we sat down amongst the jovial regulars.
When the food came it was simply delicious. Bearing in mind it is freshly prepared, the wait didn’t seem long at all.

There’s nothing that I can find to fault this place. After a morning at Twycross Zoo we were after somewhere more adult to eat and this was brilliant. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had sandwiches which were enormous and tasty. There was the added bonus of extra ciders as they had some left over from a festival. Prices were more than reasonable and I would definitely recommend this place. Freddie the dog’s company made for a perfect lunch!

We had family visiting from Australia and on the bucket list was to visit a pub with a thatched roof.
We arrived just as lunch was ending but was greeted with a smile and a ‘nothing is too much trouble’ attitude. We all had amazing meals which were hot and tastey extremely reasonably priced too.
Fabulous pub, amazing staff and great food but most importantly Freddie was the star of the show.
10 out of 10 for the experience from start to finish THANK YOU!!

visited this pub on Saturday. What a beautiful approach to the pub – once inside everyone was very friendly. Staff very helpful. Good menu selection and a good Specials board. There were 4 in our party and we all had very enjoyable meals – well cooked, very tasty and served hot. Everything I like when dining out. Excellent wine and great selection of Ales. Will definitely be visiting again. Visited May 2016

Lovely find not far from M42 and A444. Big beer garden with a very friendly dog. Wide selection of regularly changing real ales to sample, nice selection of home cooked food and friendly staff.

We visited as a large family group to celebrate my recent big birthday. We had pre-booked a late Sunday lunch. The lady at the bar made us feel very welcome and was very quick with the drinks. Our table was soon ready and we were seated in a room on our own which was great as we have four young grandchildren so we were all able to relax. The lady also brought them some colouring books and crayons which was very kind.

We found this place by chance notice a sign in a field when passing Tywcross Zoo heading towards Appleby Magna. The food was excellent and extremely good value for money, the staff were very friendly. We will certainly be visiting again hopefully on a hot day as there are tables outside.

We visit this excellent Inn almost every bank holiday / special occasion as we have family living nearby and its always a great experience. They have increased the real ale selection but still have the lovely Thatchers gold cider on tap. The food is as always locally sourced well cooked and delicious the home made chips are proper lush.
They are having a beer festival over the next Bank holiday weekend (end of April) so out next visit is already planned .. just a shame we cant pitch a tent in the beer garden for the duration..

Never been here before but had a birthday recently and decided to give it a go. Quite tired of going to restaurants where the publicity does not match the standard of food/service. The pub itself is very traditional in both its decor and menu. In other words it is a proper village pub. We had a guest ale, such a treat. And we ordered the steak and kidney pie with chips and peas and a white chocolate ice cream dessert. There steak and kidney pie portion was huge. Lots of meat and gravy. The chips were ok and the dessert was an ice cream dessert. But that is what I wanted. I did not want to go somewhere and have food that you pay a great deal for but is either cooked badly or the service is poor. This was all good and we will go back.

We visted the pub as we were going to Twycross zoo. The zoo was full so we were unable to go. We have 4 babies under 10 months that needed feeding, and 6 hungry parents. They were fully booked as it was mothers day but when the very helpful lady asked the chef they said we could get food and eat in the bar area. This was brilliant. We were able to feed the hungry babies and we got a lovely meal. We aren’t local but would definitely come back if we are in the area. Lovely friendly pub. Thank you again.

Four people two dogs paid a visit to the pub for the first time.
We found this to be a very friendly traditional pub with a warm welcoming atmosphere. Two of us had roast beef, one a mixed roast beef and ham and the other a chicken and chorizo pie.
All of the food was excellent as was the service, we shall definitely visit again.

Finally found a reasonably close by pub which has stayed traditional. Friendly staff, great cask ales and overall tradional good atmosphere. Inside is warm and clean although only minor point that the toilets may be due a refurb. Food was excellent and service friendly, will definatly be coming back, especially as my daughter has made friends with Freddy the pub dog.
Definatly worth a visit if you are in the area.

We visited after spending the morning at Twycross Zoo, we arrived just after 2pm and the Chap behind the bar told us they could still do us some food even though it was after 2pm, we had 2x Bloomer sandwiches and they were lovely. The pubs doggie came to see us and we sat by the lovely open fire. Lovely for a stop off lunch, friendly staff and price was very good. Will be going back next time we go to the Zoo.

New Year’s Day 2016

Called in to the Bird in Hand after a local walk to be greeted by friendly staff, a cosy atmosphere, warm fire, good choice of beers and fresh, tasty food. Just the job on a cold winter’s day – would recommend to anyone who enjoys a traditional English pub
