But I do hope for a generous Ploughman’s Lunch, which Orwell would not have known; its a marketing invention for Cheese from the 1970s. The BIrd in Hand’s Ploughmans was splendid, Pork Pie, a Hunk, not a Slice, of Ham, Beetroot and Silverskin Onions, plus the usual suspects.
The Bird in Hand is off the beaten track but very close to Twycross Zoo, it’s the quintessential English Village Pub.
Very welcoming friendly staff and resident pub dog Fred!! Good range of well kept beers and great menu reasonably priced. Freshly prepared generous portions. Definitely recommend.
There were four of us having an evening meal. All of us had starters and main course. All the food was excellent! Cannot fault the pub. Highly recommended .
On our way back from Twycross Zoo saw the road sign for the pub so went there. As you walk in it feels very homely & the landlady made us feel very welcome we found a table & ordered our food which we all enjoyed I had lamb shank with minted lamb sauce & creamy buttered mash & the lamb fell off the bone. Drinks were about average price would definitely return if in the area again.
A place we have intended to visit for years. It worth the wait! The menu caters for all tastes. The food we had was delicious, cooked to order and very tasty. The meat is supplied by a local butcher and you can tell that it is not the usual “food factory” quality but full of flavour. There was a lovely, warm and friendly welcome from the staff and from Pam, the head of the family ownership team. We are definitely visiting again very soon!
We were aimlessly driving round the area looking for somewhere for lunch when we happened on this gem. The welcome could not be faulted, nor the hand pulled beer and home cooked food.
The landlord was a lovely chap and made time to chat to us about the pub and area.
The food was obviously home cooked, scrummy mushroom soup and a huge ploughmans with hand carved ham and lovely chutney.
The pub dog was a character too!
We shall return to this lovely pub when our wandering find us back in the area.
We had such a lovely meal today – 16th Feb, lunchtime. My Mother had rang and booked the day before, speaking to a lovely gentleman who was more than happy for us to bring our small Yorkshire Terrier.
On arrival we were greeted by such a friendly, welcoming lady who couldn’t have been more helpful. My Mother explained that the family members we were meeting were running half an hour late – she was worried that we might be too late to eat. The lady assured her that there was no problem at all!
The food we ordered was excellent – lamb shanks and pork medallions. I am vegan and the lady went out of her way to suggest possible meals – such a pleasant change!
I don’t usually write reviews but we had such an enjoyable meal, that was made all the more pleasurable by the kind, friendly lady who served us! Thank you!
This time it was my bday and we decided to try somewhere really different and find this village pub. It is a proper traditional pub !we ordered two calamari for starters and it was very tasty !i also have to say service was very quick !the guy behind the bar was very friendly and looked very iconic ! Mains were fish and chips and burger !they were very decent size and it was also very tasty !i would say the food was fantastic!if you are after a traditional pub with checked seats and great food this is the place to visit. We will definitely come back here !thank you!
Came in with my daughter and had the best homemade Steak n Ale pie and according to my daughter she had the best burger and home made fries ever!!! Have already booked for mothers day, Will be back before then though. If you love dogs you will love it here as Freddy the pub dog is the sweetest thing, but overall this is a very homely place to eat.
Visited here with a group of 11 including five kids aged 6 and under. The room we spent the afternoon in was perfect for us to enjoy good company without interrupting others with our children.
The food was a slim menu for New Year’s Day, but it was very good and we stayed for puddings.
The burger patty was great and the meat in the pie was really good.
The service was good and positive.
We are annual pass members at Twycross Zoo and usually eat in the zoo’s own restaurant during our frequent visits. During recent refurbishment of the zoo restaurant we stumbled across this quaint, authentic pub as an alternative. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. During good weather you can eat in the idyllic beer garden. Very impressed, we will never eat at the zoo again and will return here time and time again!
Nice pub. Good food, good ales and great service. Nice in the summer too to sit outside in the beer garden
The Bird in Hand ticks all the right boxes; whitewashed walls, thatched roof, low beams, varied selection of well conditioned cask ales, good Pub Grub, beer garden, even down to the welcoming and scrounging labrador.
